Methodology & sources
This calculator multiplies chained probabilities:
- Hippo encounter: 0.005 — Site estimate: about 1 in 200 crossings of hippo-inhabited water brings a person within close range of a hippo. Chosen with the attack probability so that defaults (2 crossings/day, 300 days) give 1.5e-4 per person per year, which across roughly 3.3 million people who regularly use hippo waterways reproduces the commonly cited ~500 deaths/year
