Methodology & sources

This calculator multiplies chained probabilities:

  1. Hippo encounter: 0.005 — Site estimate: about 1 in 200 crossings of hippo-inhabited water brings a person within close range of a hippo. Chosen with the attack probability so that defaults (2 crossings/day, 300 days) give 1.5e-4 per person per year, which across roughly 3.3 million people who regularly use hippo waterways reproduces the commonly cited ~500 deaths/year

  4. Hippo attacks: 0.0001 — Site estimate: about 1 in 10,000 close encounters escalates to physical contact; most end with the hippo submerging, displaying, or charging and veering off. No published per-encounter attack rate exists; derivation: 0.005 x 2 x 300 x 0.0001 x 0.5 = 1.5e-4 per year
  5. Fatal outcome: 0.5 — Uganda data (1923-1994): 87% of hippo attacks fatal; Mozambique data: 55%. Conservative estimate ~50% (van Houdt & Traill, 2022, Frontiers in Conservation Science)
