Around 20 Americans die from lightning strikes each year. The National Weather Service (NWS) has tracked this figure for decades, and the long-run average has been declining from over 400 deaths annually in the 1940s to about 20 today. When the number comes up, it is almost always deployed as reassurance: don’t worry, you’re more likely to win the lottery than get struck by lightning. The implication is that lightning risk is a trivia category, not a genuine hazard.

Accurate, yes. But like most population-averaged mortality statistics, the figure is nearly useless for predicting your personal risk.

Why It Feels Like a Non-Risk

The “you’re more likely to…” comparisons have multiplied over the years. You’re more likely to be killed by a cow. More likely to die from a bee sting. More likely to be struck while winning the lottery. These comparisons work rhetorically because they anchor on a feeling of absurdity. Lightning seems like an act of God, not a calculable hazard.

The broader cultural response to lightning is, in fact, a success story in public safety communication. “When thunder roars, go indoors” is one of the most effective safety campaigns the NWS has ever run. People have genuinely internalized the message. At the first sign of a storm, most Americans seek shelter. The drop from 400-plus deaths in the mid-20th century to 20 today reflects improved building infrastructure, better storm warning systems, and real behavior change.

But that success creates a statistical artifact. The 20-deaths figure captures lightning danger only after nearly the entire population has already removed themselves from exposure.

The Exposure Problem

The contiguous United States receives roughly 20 to 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning flashes per year, according to the National Lightning Detection Network (a 2024 analysis in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society puts the figure at 23.4 million). The country is large and the population is large, but the fraction meaningfully exposed to a storm at any given moment is small.

Most Americans work indoors. Most spend storms inside a car, a building, or under a roof. The people who do not are the ones who account for the bulk of those 20 annual deaths.

NWS data on lightning fatalities by activity tells the story clearly. Over the past two decades, the leading activities at time of death have been fishing, camping, boating, farming, and construction work, with golf and soccer close behind. All of these keep people outdoors for extended periods regardless of weather, either because participants push through light rain or because workers face pressure to stay on site.

The denominator for lightning risk is not 330 million Americans. It is the far smaller number of Americans who spend meaningful time outdoors during active thunderstorms.

The Real Math

NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory estimates that the United States experiences about 100,000 thunderstorms per year. Distributed across regions, some areas see electrical storms dozens of times each year. Florida averages more than 100 thunderstorm days annually and accounts for a disproportionate share of lightning fatalities, earning it the nickname “the lightning capital of the United States.”

Nobody publishes a per-hour strike rate for a person standing outside in a storm, so we back-calculated one. Twenty deaths a year at a 10% fatality rate means about 200 people are struck annually. If around 30 million Americans spend 60 hours a year outdoors in thunderstorm conditions, that is 1.8 billion exposed person-hours, or roughly one strike per 10 million hours outdoors in a storm. Treat it as this site’s estimate, not a measured figure. At that rate, two hours outside on 30 storm days a year gives an annual death risk of about 1 in 1.7 million, ten times the national average. An outdoor worker in Florida who works through afternoon thunderstorms 100 days a year, an hour at a time, lands near 1 in 1 million.

The fatality rate per strike is approximately 10%, according to NWS data. The remaining 90% of survivors often experience long-term neurological effects: memory loss, chronic pain, difficulty concentrating. A non-fatal strike is far from a clean outcome, which means the dangerous event is the strike itself, not just the subset of fatal ones.

Chaining storm frequency by region, hours outdoors per storm, exposure geometry (open field vs. under a tree vs. near tall structures), and the 10% fatality rate produces an annual risk that varies by orders of magnitude depending on who you are and what you do.

Your Actual Risk

The variables that move the number most are how many hours you spend outdoors during storms, your geographic region (Florida and the Gulf Coast are markedly more dangerous than the Pacific Northwest), and whether your typical outdoor environment offers shelter opportunities. Who Actually Faces This Risk

The gap between the headline figure and the occupational reality is stark.

Construction workers often cannot leave a job site when a storm approaches. A roofer or a worker inside an unfinished steel frame faces direct exposure for hours, without the protection a completed building would offer.

Farmers and agricultural workers spend extended periods in open fields, often during the same afternoon thunderstorm seasons that produce the most lightning. USDA labor patterns mean fieldwork often continues through approaching weather.

Golfers stand exposed on open courses, often holding metal clubs and reluctant to abandon a round. The golf community has made real progress on warning systems and course evacuations, but golf still appears in NWS lightning fatality data year after year.

Youth soccer, baseball, and football coaches face the specific challenge of managing large groups of children across open fields, where the pressure to continue games is real and the warning window is short.

The 20-death national average partly reflects that most of these populations have improved their shelter-seeking behavior. The people who still die are disproportionately those who stay outside longest.
